Contrary to popular opinion I really enjoyed this movie and got in September what I had been looking for all summer: a scary movie that stays with you even after you leave the theater. This movie made me jump various times with its high suspense moments while questioning every characters intentions. The plot twists and how it intertwines with the first film keeps you guessing all throughout the movie and fills in a few blanks that were left in the first film. The director experimented a bit more with the camera angles to make it more realistic which I appreciated in comparison to the first one. Many scenes in the movie are just plain creepy and make you rethink baby toys and pianos altogether. The acting was very believable, even from the younger actors which I think was key to the movie being a success and getting its theme through to the public. This film touches a few topics that can be sensitive to some viewers like the battle between good and evil, parents abusing their children, murder and mind games like being trapped in your nightmares with no way to wake up. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone that enjoys a suspenseful type of scary movie and is willing to be a little creeped out.

To begin with, its a remake which should have been my first clue since I rarely like a remake more than the original. This movie was truly hard to watch... not because of the blood and gore but because I was just painfully waiting for it to get better or end already. However many, many people actually liked this movie for reasons I will never understand, so I do suggest you watch it for yourself and make your own opinion. But if you think its bad, you were warned. The movie had potential to be a great film and personally I'm always looking for a horror film that will scare me but this one fell short in many aspects. First of all it was a very cliche setup: a couple of friends alone in the woods, some curse is set free and everyone starts dying. Has been done way too many times already. I wouldn't have minded the setup if it had had some more substance to it... I don't know, some explanation about the curse, something meaning behind it all. What makes these types of movies so scary and makes them stick with you is their ability to make it personal, to make a few points that really push your beliefs and this movie just completely lacked a point to the killings. In another sense the forced acting and how unrealistic the effects were didn't help the movie at all. In the end the cliche setup, fake effects and senseless plot made this film more of a gory, bad comedy than a horror film. |
